What the BLEEP Do We Know!?
Want to see the film that's kept thousands of moviegoers glued
to their seats, refusing to leave the theatre after the credits rolled
because they felt compelled to discuss the film's ideas with perfect
strangers sitting close by?
In February 2004 a remarkable movie named What
the BLEEP Do We Know!? was shown for the first time in a
small theater in Yelm, Washington. The three filmmakers,
William Arntz, Betty Chasse and Mark Vicente, hadn't been
able to arrange a distribution deal, that is, no company
would take on the task of getting the film into theatres
across the US because they believed there was no audience for
a documentary about quantum physics, neurochemistry and
channeling.
Were they ever wrong!

The producers distributed the movie themselves, starting in a small theatre in
Betty Chasse's hometown. The people who saw it were blown away and brought
their friends along to subsequent screenings, extending the film's trial run in
the theatre from days to months, and giving the producers enough positive
feedback to get it shown in another theatre. What the Bleep's journey,
from outcast project to the fifth highest grossing documentary in the US, is
now the stuff of legend.
What the BLEEP Do We Know!? is now available on DVD. I've seen it at
least a half-dozen times and continue to get something new from it at each
viewing. It seems to elicit strong responses from people, both positive and
negative, depending on the person's belief system. And I must warn you, if
you're a member of a traditional religious organization, prepare to have your
assumptions about reality questioned.
