Do you have permission to succeed?

Have you sometimes felt like Cinderella, waiting for that special someone to wake you from a vaguely sensed state of passivity? It may not be a handsome prince you want yet you feel the need for something to happen before you can move forward.

Sometimes the echo of unfinished business from the past can keep us in a form of suspended animation, at least in some part of our lives. The following example illustrates how this works and may bring to mind some area in your life where this applies.

Nancy and her younger brother, Kenny, grew up in the 1960s. From as early as she could remember, Nancy and her mother sat in the back seat of the family car, while Kenny sat in the front seat beside their father. Every Sunday on the way home from church, Dad would turn the corner into the street where they lived, and then ask his son, "Kenny, would you like to drive us the rest of the way home today?"

Kenny always said yes. Then he'd climb onto on his father's lap and take control of the steering wheel. With Dad's feet on the pedals, the two of them would slowly drive the three short blocks to their house.

When Nancy reached her late teens, she made one half-hearted attempt to get her learner's permit, but was too nervous to pass the driving test. She rationalized that it wasn't important to get her license at that point in time and didn't bother taking the test again. She moved to a city with an excellent public transport system, and convinced herself she didn't need a car.

At 30 years old, Nancy came home for an extended stay, planning to spend a couple of months with her parents and younger sister. Kenny was away in Europe. Their sister, Kate, was eighteen and had just landed her first job in a real estate office. One morning as Kate was leaving for work, she turned to Nancy and said, "If you’d like to get a license while you’re here, you can borrow my car while I'm at work. I don’t need it during the day."

Nancy was taken aback at first, but after a few days of sitting around the house, decided to take Kate up on her offer. She signed up for lessons with the local driving school but proved to be an anxious student. She persisted and eventually went for the test.

On the day she got her license Nancy had a revelation. She had been waiting all those years for an invitation from her father. Never once did he turn to her on those far away Sunday mornings and say, "Nancy, would you like to drive us the rest of the way home today?"

Instead, the invitation came many years later from her sister. Kate had unknowingly stepped into the breach and given Nancy permission to learn to drive. Nancy only realized what had stopped her once she was given what she needed.

Whose permission are you waiting for before you use your talents and abilities?

Whose permission do you need to shine? To be the best you can be? To break out of your shell? To try something new?

Whoever it may be, take a moment to confront them in your imagination. Forgive them for not knowing what to do, and absolve them of the task. Mentally let them know that because you're an adult now, you are the one who decides what you'll do and what you won't do. You have the power to give yourself permission to do anything you want.
